“On a Roll” debuts at No. 19 on the Pop Digital Song Sales chart (dated June 29) and No. 39 on Digital Song Sales with 7,000 downloads sold in the week ending June 20, according to Nielsen Music. The song also drew 3.5 million U.S. streams and enters the streaming-, airplay- and sales-based Billboard Hot 100’s Bubbling Under chart at No. 23.
The track is credited to Ashley O, the fictional pop star portrayed by Cyrus in the episode “Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too” in the new season of Netflix’s Black Mirror.
“On a Roll,” meanwhile, transforms Nine Inch Nails‘ grunge classic “Head Like a Hole,” which reached No. 28 on Alternative Songs in 1990. As for NIN frontman and the song’s writer, Trent Reznor, he continues to bask in an unlikely, and multi-Cyrus-adjacent, mainstream spotlight in 2019; Lil Nas X leads the Hot 100 for a 12th week with “Old Town Road,” featuring Miley’s dad, Billy Ray Cyrus. The smash samples NIN’s “34 Ghost IV,” from the industrial rock band’s 2008 album Ghosts I–IV.
