The song was written and produced by Dr. Luke and Benny Blanco. The song was announced as the second single by Spears’ official website on October 31, 2008.
The song has so far received positive reviews. Digital Spy said that “Circus is a rampaging monster of a song whose chorus kicks off with a Max Martin-style thump.“I’m like the ringleader, I call the shots, I’m like a firecracker, I make it hot,” Britney sings on the verses.
The music video was confirmed by Spears herself on November 6, 2008 at the MTV Europe Music Awards, while on set shooting it. She was seen sporting a curled bob hair style.
